A statement from the Presidency said the letter from Mr Koulendoru expressed deep regret over the inconsiderate acts committed by his son, which he strongly condemned. The message was addressed to the President and all Turkish Cypriots: “I can assure you that my son has realised his mistake and regrets what he did, and it will not be repeated. Through you I would like to sincerely apologise on behalf of my son and of all our family to everyone who is upset, angered and disappointed by his act.” it said and asked President Akinci to convey these regrets to the Turkish Cypriot people.
During their visit on the Presidential Palace the family were accompanied by the Grand Mufti, Talip Atalay, as the incident had taken place during a religious ceremony in the village of Akdoğan, and by Salpy Eskidjian coordinator of the Office of the Religious Track inthe Cyprus Peace Process at the Swedish embassy, and the co-chair of the Technical Committee at the bi-communal Education Technical committee Meltem Onurkan Samani.
