Soyz Bar owner Hatice Tevfik said she and her family and staff wanted to create “something permanent” in remembrance of the young man and decided to plant a tree in his name.
“Sam and his family would come over each year for holidays and would always visit our bar as it was his favourite and through that we became very close, like family,” said Ms Tevfik.
“Eventually we became very attached as he was young and close to my son Soy as well. We would act like parents to him whenever he visited us. When he came with his family or girlfriends he loved to enjoy a glass of Jack Daniels and make conversation. When we heard of his passing we were deeply saddened as he was only 24 years-old.
“We wanted to have something of him here at the bar for us to remember whenever we see and think of him and planting a lemon tree seemed perfect as it would blossom and grow from season to season as he would have done.
“We planted it together with his family who have now returned to the UK. It was touching to see them happy and supporting our decision as our family and staff will always love Sam dearly”.
