Tatar addressed hundreds of UK Turkish Cypriot group representatives last night – at an event held in London at the Regency Banqueting Suite.
“You are a serious asset to us; you care for your homeland, the TRNC. I have instructed our lawyers to initiate the process of making changes to the law in order to pave the way for Turkish Cypriots to vote from abroad,” he said. “We are looking at the practicalities as to how this can be done. . .” he added.
Mr. Tatar wants the TRNC to get the advantages that Brexit affords. “Brexit represents an important opportunity” for North Cyprus-UK relations in respect of trade and travel,” he noted.
Meeting with former Conservative Party leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith earlier that day, Mr. Tatar discussed the issue of disembarkation in Turkey for flights from Ercan Airport to London. The two politicians are working together to try to get a rule change, so that passengers from Ercan are not obliged to get off the flight in Turkey, collect their bags, and then go through security again.
