TC police under scrutiny in US Human Rights report

Turkish Cypriot authorities have come under scrutiny in a US Human Rights Report, which said TRNC police “abused detainees” and “failed to intervene effectively” during last year’s attack on Afrika newspaper.

The report, published this month, looks at human rights abuse in areas including prison conditions, courts and judicial system, police, freedom of expression and of the media, migrants and refugees, labour and discrimination. January 22 last year saw protesters hurl rocks and bottles at Afrika’s Lefkoşa offices — causing 16,450TL in damage — after being angered by a front-page headline likening Turkey’s offensive in Syria and its 1974 military intervention in Cyprus to “occupation”. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had condemned the paper and said his supporters in the TRNC would “give the necessary response”.
