January 22 last year saw protesters hurl rocks and bottles at Afrika’s Lefkoşa offices — causing 16,450TL in damage — after being angered by a front-page headline likening Turkey’s offensive in Syria and its 1974 military intervention in Cyprus to “occupation”. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had condemned the paper and said his supporters in the TRNC would “give the necessary response”.
