Şule Lokmanoğlu Aker, a business and economics professor at Eastern Mediterranean Universitywho started writing newspaper columns in 1975, was voted in at a recent WAPC gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Speaking to Cyprus Today following her re-election, the Cornell University-educated, academic said: “My main agenda is to campaign for the freedom of the press and to provide a code of ethics for responsible journalism. Last year we saved two journalists in Tanzania.
“Media is such an important factor in designing the culture of societies and influencing people’s lives, that it must be done in the right way . . . a free press requires self-regulating organisation.”
Prof Aker said her other main aim during her new tenure would be to increase the membership of the WAPC, which currently stands at 22, and to “boost the recognition of our country”.
“It is my mission to gather more member countries, increase our international co-operation and also our international voice,” she said.
