Mr Tatar, speaking exclusively to Cyprus Today, said he wanted to visit the UK prior to the December 12 general election there to “gauge the views of Turkish Cypriots living there” during numerous meetings with community representatives.

Mr Tatar flew into Heathrow airport’s Terminal 5 on Thursday night where he was greeted by dozens of Turkish Cypriots who welcomed him with a bouquet of flowers, including the TRNC’s representative to London, Oya Tuncalı.

Mr Tatar then took part in a dinner meeting hosted in his honour by Turkish Ambassador to London Ümit Yalçın.

He also met with civil society group representatives and took part in a reception organised by the Turkish Community Football Federation.

“After Brexit, it is important to explore how we, as Turkish Cypriots, can improve our relations with the UK Government.
