Hasan Kusetoğulları suffered fatal injuries in the crash at 10pm on Wednesday on the İnönün-Nergisli road near Gazimağusa and died in an ambulance on the way to hospital.

His friend at the wheel, Hasan Sütlüceli, escaped with minor injuries and was arrested. He was bailed when he appeared before Gazimağusa District Court yesterday.

Police confirmed he had no driving licence and was too young to apply for one.

The fatality came two days after Önder Gülkan, 26, died when his car left the Mutluyaka-Mormenekşe road, also near Gazimağusa.

Police said Mr Gülkan, from Mormenekşe, hit a rock and lost control of his vehicle, which overturned twice. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The week's road death toll began last Saturday morning when two Britons were among several passengers hurt in a smash between a minibus and a lorry on the Girne-Çatalköy road in which one traveller on the bus was killed.
