The death of Mr Backhouse was announced in a statement from St Andrews church where he served as an assistant priest following retirement from a UK parish ministry in 2007.

Mr Backhouse was born in 1941 and trained and worked as an industrial designer before his ordination in 1985. After completing training at Oak Hill Theological College, he served as Curate of Branksome in the Diocese of Salisbury from 1987 to 1991 when he was appointed Priest in Charge, then Rector, of the Parish of Bluntisham in the Diocese of Ely.

Mr Backhouse retired from the parish in 2007 when he was appointed to St Andrews. Speaking to Cyprus Today, the Reverend Michael Graham of St Andrews Church, said: “Colin was a deeply committed Christian gentlemen who was close to God. He helped many people with their faith and was a huge encouragement to all who met him. We are grateful for his great service to St Andrews over the years.

“We are happy that he is now at peace and free from all pain and sorrow.

He will be deeply missed by all whose faith was strengthened and sustained by his witness here among us.  Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Ingrid and the family.”
