THE TRNC faces an increased risk of fires this summer, mainly because municipalities are failing to take essential safety measures, Forestry Department head Ercan Poyraz has told Cyrus Today.
As soaring temperatures and windy conditions led to renewed calls for the public to guard against accidental fires, some local authorities are actually increasing risks by dumping household waste in local areas rather than sending it – as required by law – to the Güngör landfill facility near Lefkoşa, said Mr Poyraz.
“Legally, they have to take rubbish to Güngör but some are not doing so, resulting in rubbish being dumped in areas including Alsancak, Esentepe, Karpaz and Alayköy, where it constitutes a fire risk,” he said.
“Municipalities must do their bit. They cannot keep saying that they lack funds to buy fuel for transport to Güngör or do not have enough staff. We have discussed this issue with them several times and will do so again because no proper action has been taken so far.
