TRNC has ‘gone bust’

The TRNC state has “gone bust”, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay has declared — as scores of council workers threatened to march on the capital amid fears that they may lose their jobs.

People’s Party leader Dr Özersay gave the stark assessment of the country’s finances in a live TV interview on Thursday, during which he warned that “various institutions and municipalities” were “bankrupt”.

He also said he was cracking down on government expenses for items such as flowers and refreshments and mobile phone bill allowances of 250TL per MP, as well as the use of official vehicles for non-official business.

“I did not bankrupt those institutions within one-and-a-half months [of coming to power],” Dr Özersay said. “The dire reality is here. If everyone takes responsibility, then we can overcome it.”
