Two hearings for Girne businessman

GİRNE businessman Bulut Akacan was released on bail following the latest hearing in an assault case on last Wednesday – only to be remanded in custody later on the same day for a separate case relating to illegal cyber-betting and money laundering allegations.

Two hearings for Girne businessman

Mr Akacan’s day began with an appearance at Girne Assizes Court, along with bodyguards Vasıf Kurbanov and Orçun Özorçun, over an alleged assault of Erhan Başay and Zeki Asımoğlu on January 7 in Girne.

New senior prosecutor in the case, Mustafa Atakara, asked that the trial be adjourned to Wednesday to allow him time to examine the case file, a request granted by the court.

The defendants’ lawyers had asked for a shorter delay, to Monday.

Mr Kurbanov and Mr Özorçun were returned to custody, while Mr Akacan was re-released on bail ahead of his day’s second appearance before a judge, this time at Girne District Court.

Mr Akacan and two other suspects, Hüseyin Yiğit Gökdereli and İrfan Önen, accused of running and illegally profiting from betting websites Kalebet and Dobranet, were brought before Judge Meltem Dündar for a five-and-half-hour long bail hearing.

Following the lengthy proceedings, the court decided to remand Mr Akacan in custody for up to three months due to his “potential to commit further offences”. Mr Gökdereli and Mr Önenwere released on bail.

The trio had been arrested following a police raid on apartments at the FEO Elegance block, owned by Mr Akacan, on August 29.

A court had previously heard how the betting ring had made “profits” of some 14 million TL between 2018 and 2019.
