Photos and film of an excavator perched above the Roman tomb in central Girne as it ripped sandstone from the surface spread like wildfire online yesterday as cultural activist Oya Kutsal and others called for action.
Girne Antiquities Department head Gözem Gökhan said: "We went immediately to the site of the tomb which is the same era as Chrysokava – and was a Roman quarry later used as a tomb -- and stopped the work."
The ruined Agios Vasilieous Church in Karakum, a protected monument in the care of the Vakıflar Administration, was also under threat as foundations were excavated to within just over a metre from its crumbling walls.
