Workplaces shut in health and safety crackdown

Thirteen construction sites — six each in Lefkoşa and Girne and one in Güzelyurt — were shut down on Wednesday for flouting health and safety laws as part of a new crackdown.

Workplaces shut in health and safety crackdown

The moves came after Labour and Social Security Minister Zeki Çeler, who took over his role last Friday following the formation of a new four-party coalition, set up a “crisis desk” this week following a spate of workplace accidents, including two fatal ones, since the start of the year.

Under the new crackdown, Labour Department inspectors will order workers to down tools if they find any “life-threatening” breaches of health and safety rules and if their employers fail to take “urgent measures” to address them.
