Bookshop owner Nahide Merlen said she had worked for 30 years despite all obstacles to bring out books for people and added, in the light of recent events in the TRNC and Turkey: “It cannot be a crime to read a book and we are very concerned that a book could be treated as an offensive weapon.”

The 12-day exhibition, from September 4 to 15, offers a 10 per cent discount on books in Turkish and English and will be open Monday to Saturday from 9am-1pm and 5pm until midnight and on Sunday from 5pm-12am.

A reception and Readers and Writers Get Together launches the fair at 8.30pm on Monday, September 4 at the Kızılbaş Church, now a youth centre, opening with live music from Alkapon and Arda Gündüz, and a photographic exhibition of its 30-year history.

Debates start with the theme of increasing production presented by the mayors of Lefkoşa, Gönyeli, Mehmetçik and Lefke on Tuesday, September 5 and will continue at 8.30pm every night on subjects from human rights to populism, literature, Turkish Cypriot society, the press and civil society protest.

Highlights include an evening with Turkish Cypriot filmmaker Derviş Zaim on Tuesday, September 12, entitled Roses and Bread, and his acceptance of the annual Işık Bookfair Honorary Award.
