Squads who have been searching for more than a month brought a suitcase containing remains believed to be of missing 30-year-old Filipina national Maricar Valdez to the surface of the “Red Lake” at Mitsero, so called because of the colour of its waters, contaminated with mining waste.
They are now switching their attention to lake Memi, near Xyliatos, where six-year-old Sierra Granze's body is believed to have been dumped, but say the chances of finding it are slim.
Edward Branco, owner of Brasal Marine Services brought in by the authorities to search for the last two of Metaxas's seven suspected victims, said on Wednesday that even though the waters at Memi were clearer than at Mitsero, the hunt presented other challenges.
“[Memi] is 60 metres deep, [Red Lake] is 20 metres. There are also cliffs and similar dangerous conditions such as shifting rocks,” he said.
“Also we are not looking for a suitcase but for a child wrapped up in a sheet and a cement block. The possibilities are very slim.”
