Govt, Akıncı's vision of Cyprus solution diverge

DISAGREEMENT between the newly formed coalition and President Mustafa Akıncı resurfaced during Bayram over whether to continue an “exhausted” quest for a federal solution or seek new models.

Mr Akıncı, in his written Bayram message, said it was important to “show the correct will” communally, as well as individually, and to “keep struggling for peace and prosperity . . . which have yet to be attained in Cyprus for numerous reasons”.

Referring back to the July 2017 collapse of the international peace summit in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, he said: “For nearly two years [since then], have faced the continuous groggy stance of the Greek Cypriot side. Sometimes, we have received information behind closed doors that they have mentioned a two-state solution, then they have changed, saying, ‘We didn't mean that, we meant perhaps a confederation'. Then they have changed to a loose federation. Then they have changed to a decentralised federation, and in doing so muddied the waters. As if this was not enough, they entered into a refusal and denial of our political equality.”
