Former finance minister Serdar Denktaş, the DP leader at the centre of a land lease controversy which prompted HP to quit the government, claimed that with the chain of events a “game” had been “spoiled” and HP had “lost prestige”.

“The game may change in order to restore their prestige, but chaos may ensue and early elections could be on the cards. [In that case], we will assume the role of the Opposition,” he commented after meeting President Mustafa Akıncı on Tuesday.

TDP leader Cemal Özyiğit also took up the issue of a “scenario” in relation to the coalition's disintegration, commenting that it had been wrecked “by those who fabricated this scenario”.

Speaking on a Bayrak television programme, Mr Özyiğit was criticial of HP, saying: “They have caused the collapse of the coalition and have no right to leave the country without a government.”
