The event in Ella’s Bar at Tolga’s began at noon on a recent Saturday and went on into the early hours of Sunday, with live music from acts including the NormAl Band, Laura Cox, Lee, John and Tune, Jimmy  Elvis and Electric Pete. Karaoke and a Morris dancing display adding extra dimensions to the entertainment.

Food and drink was provided by the venue which also hosted a raffle and auction, an archery competition – and a charity hair waxing for owner Fevzi Çakmaktaş.

Organiser Sandy Lee said she would organise another charity event in aid of the women’s shelter and establish drop-off points around Alsancak and Lapta for collecting donated items such as bedding and toiletries.

“I feel great about the outcome as it was the first time I had organised such a thing,” she said. “We managed to raise awareness about the shelter as well as collect money to pay for items it urgently needs, which was really satisfying”.

The women’s shelter currently houses six women, three with children and one who is pregnant.
