SWIMMERS splashed through rough seas at Christmas and on New Year’s Eve for annual swims to raise money for charity.
The challenge began with the Christmas Day swim at the Acapulco resort and hotel in aid of the Help Those with Cancer Association (Tulips) and the Kemal Saraçoğlu Foundation for Children with Leukaemia and the Fight Against Cancer.
A total of 22 people braved the cold water as they were cheered on by crowds of locals and expats.
After spending 10 minutes in the choppy waters, the swimmers enjoyed warm coffee and brandy when they rushed back onto the shore.
During the event, a 1,000TL donation was made by the Rotary Club of Nicosia Sarayönü. A presentation to the two charities is planned to take place soon once all the cash pledged has been collected.
“I’ve been organising this swim for seven years and we’ve done it for several charities over the years, however for the past three years or so we have stuck to raising money for cancer charities that receive great support and they are very grateful for every penny raised,” organiser Barbara Fursman said.
“People see the swim as a traditional event and we always do well with the turnout and the amount we raise. I thank everyone for their support and for making it a fantastic day.”
Mrs Fursman and husband Graham also raised 1,300TL for Çatalköy Primary School and 3,000TL for the North Cyprus Cancer Charity Trust through separate fundraisers.
