Yiğitcan Hekimoğlu, 25, studying master degree in Girne American University, took part in the 4x100m relay as a member of the Turkish national team which finished in seventh place.
After the team qualified for the race on the ninth-day of the championship, TRNC sports commentators said that Mr Yiğitcan had “written history” having “competed for the first time ever in a men’s international athletics championship final as a Turkish Cypriot.”
His coach, Celal Keleş, the North Cyprus Athletics Federation and government Sports Department all offered congratulations.
Mr Yiğitcan had been described as a “true TRNC’ian” and an example to the success that can come through hard work and determination.
The US-team came first in a time of 37.70 followed in second place by Great Britain in 37.76 and Jamaica third in 37.95.
In 2011, Meliz Redif ran as a Turkish Cypriot in the 31st European Salon Athletics Championship in Paris which generated similar pride in the TRNC.
