TC swimmer smashes Turkey records

A TURKISH Cypriot swimmer smashed two Turkish records and won international ranking at a world championship event in Budapest, Hungary, which finished on Sunday.

Melis Sevinç, a TRNC Water Sports Federation champion, was a member of the Turkish national team and among 14,000 swimmers competing in the 17th Fina World Masters Championships.

During the 13-day competition, she not only broke the Turkish record for the 50m butterfly but then, in the 4x50m medley relay, formed part of a squad which finished in a time of 2:26.42 to not only smash the Turkish record for that event but also earn sixth place in global masters rankings.

Her triumph came as three other Turkish Cypriots scored swimming success in Turkey.

Taking part under the TRNC national banner in the first Amasra International Open Water Swimming tournament in the western Black Sea region, Hasan İlker of Aspava Sports Club and Osman Akkuş of Near East University both came second in their respective categories while another Turkish Cypriot, Caner Aspava, came third in his.

All three swimmers took to the podium to receive their medals and trophies.
