The NEU side scored a 78-70 victory over Fenerbahçe in the best-of-five final play-offs in the Turkish Women's Basketball League, following up on Tuesday wth a 73-67 win to take a 2-0 going into last night's potentially decisive third tie.
However Sunday's play was overshadowed by an incident in which Fenerbahçe Sports Club head Aziz Yıldırım allegedly slapped NEU team chairman Işık Eyigüngör before the game began.
It is not clear what caused the incident, but Mr Eyigüngör told journalists afterwards: “I put out my hand to say welcome and he slapped me.”
Turkey’s Basketball Federation disiplinary council fined Mr Yıldırım 40,000TL and banned him from matches for six months, while Mr Eyigöngör was banned for a month and fined 7,500TL.
In the extra-tense atmosphere that followed on Sunday, NEU fell 10 points behind in the third period but made a dramatic comeback to win at İstanbul’s Caferağa Sports Hall – used by NEU as its “home” venue because international basketball federation rules prevent teams playing in North Cyprus.
