A TURKISH Cypriot became champion and another came third in a major Turkish athletics tournament.

The Turkish Athletics Federation-organised Turkish Under-20 and Under-23 championships were held in Bursa on June 24 and 25.

Buse Savaşkan, of the TRNC Athletics Federation, became champion in the women's U23 high jump, clearing a winning 1.83m to set a new personal best.

Adem Çavuşoğlu, also from the TRNC and coached by Ms Savaşkan's trainer, Mahmut Koral, came third in the U23 javelin with a throw of 56.53m.

Long-jumper Mustafa Yorulmaz, who took part in the U20 long jump, came fifth with a leap of 6.94m.

Alp Kardeş, meanwhile, came 15th in the U20 javelin event with a throw of 45.98m while Atillahan Ateş was 16th in the same event with 45.45m.

Kubilay Tok came seventh in his 110m hurdles heat – 13th in the competition overall – with a time of 15.9 seconds.
