GC owner vows to revamp TC cemetery

Britain’s biggest Turkish and Turkish Cypriot cemetery, thrown into disarray after a series of scandals ended in its owners going into voluntary liquidation, has been bought by a Greek Cypriot funeral director with the promise of a major revamp.

Peter Demetriou, 50, whose business is based in Wood Green, north London, pledged the Tottenham Park Cemetery “will continue to be Turkish” and said he had put a moratorium in place on purchase of new plots.

The last resting place of some 6,000 people hit the headlines last year with two closures in nine months following discovery of human remains above ground, fears over health and safety, and complaints of poor maintenance, including unkempt graves and paths.
