A woman who threw verbal racial insults at a north London neighbour believed to be a Turkish Cypriot has been told by a British court that she had narrowly avoided jail.

Ediz Enver, of Waltham Abbey, claimed he had been subject to racist and homophobic remarks by Colette Donaghey, 50, in June last year.

Chelmsford Crown Court heard she had repeatedly used the word “pushti” — a version of Turkish slang that translates as “faggot” — and made comments including “why don’t you go back to your own country?” and “it was so nice around here and then you get scum coming in”.
