A FIVE-year-old boy died and his mother was left injured following a crash that occurred on the Taşkent route of the Northern Ring Road in Lefkoşa on Thursday afternoon.

Reports said that Gözde Demirkaya Taşkentli was taking her son to the swimming pool at Cyprus International University (CIU) when the accident occurred.

According to information provided by the police press office, Ms Taşkentli was “speeding and driving carelessly” southbound from Taşkent when she came to the CIU roundabout, “lost control and crashed into the central reservation”.

The car then “flipped over and stopped upside down”, covering a distance of 90 metres.

Upon receiving notification of the accident, the police, paramedics and Lefkoşa Fire Brigade teams were dispatched to the scene. 

The mother and son were taken to Lefkoşa Dr Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, but young Karel died from his injuries.

In addition, reports said that in her initial statement to the police at the hospital, Ms Taşkentli said that she had “lost consciousness” shortly before the accident.
