THE United Nations Mine Action Service (Unmas) has identified 18 hazardous areas near the “Green Line” for landmine clearance – as a new UN project was launched to turn minefields into sports fields.
The island's Unficyp peackeeping force announced that discussions on the project would continue alongside fundraising for a pilot project to establish a sports facility inside the buffer zone south of Gazimağusa.
A statement said: "The area for this project has been identified, close to the new crossing point in Derinya which opened in November 2018.
It is lined up to become a “hub of bicommunality” accessible to people of all abilities -- girls and boys, women and men – from both sides of the border.
