TURKEY’S Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli has warned Greece that foreign backing for a planned electricity link with South Cyprus and Israel will not overcome Ankara’s objections.

Speaking at his party’s parliamentary group meeting, Bahçeli said the project had revived disputes over maritime jurisdiction, pointing to US support and Athens’ efforts to resume seabed surveys.

He said Turkey’s position was clear: the proposed route required prior coordination, and Greece would be making a “serious mistake” if it believed support from other countries could bypass Ankara’s concerns.

Bahçeli argued that closer ties with Israel and arms purchases would not guarantee Greece’s security without recognition of Turkey’s rights and Turkish Cypriot sovereignty.

He urged the Greek and Greek Cypriot sides to pursue dialogue and diplomacy, saying lasting peace depended on friendly relations with their neighbours.
