Erhürman New York-bound — but no joint Cyprus talks planned

President Tufan Erhürman will travel to New York on September 23 for high-level talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his Personal Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín — but there will be no trilateral or expanded 5+1 meeting between the sides.

Erhürman confirmed his New York programme on Thursday while assessing the latest developments in the Cyprus issue following talks in the UN-controlled buffer zone.

He said he would meet separately with Guterres and Holguín, with discussions expected to focus on where the Cyprus process currently stands and whether there is a viable way forward.

Erhürman said the prospects for the next stage of the process should become clearer following the New York contacts.

However, he confirmed that there are currently no plans for either a trilateral meeting involving himself, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Guterres, or a broader 5+1 gathering involving the two Cypriot sides, the three guarantor powers — Türkiye, Greece and the United Kingdom — and the United Nations.

Instead, Guterres is expected to meet the Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot sides separately during their presence in New York.

The development follows Guterres’ confirmation that no 3+1 or 5+1 Cyprus meeting will take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The UN chief has indicated that further preparation is needed before another expanded meeting can be held, saying any future gathering should have a realistic prospect of producing an outcome.
