Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz will arrive in North Cyprus tomorrow for a two-day visit that will include official meetings, ceremonies and a series of openings.

Mr Yılmaz will begin his programme at Ercan Airport, where he is due to make a joint press statement with Prime Minister Ünal Üstel shortly after his arrival.

He will then attend the “TRNC Symposium on Combating Addiction” at the Republic’s Assembly.

His programme will also include the state commemoration ceremony at Atlılar and the official opening of the Muratağa, Atlılar and Sandallar Martyrs Museum.

On Saturday, September 19, Mr Yılmaz is scheduled to travel to Kalkanlı to attend the opening of the Güzelyurt Cold Storage Facility.

The visit will also carry a political dimension, coming amid the countdown to December’s elections and following a turbulent period within the governing coalition.

It will be Mr Yılmaz’s first visit to the TRNC since Prime Minister Üstel dismissed YDP leader and Public Works and Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı in the aftermath of the passenger ferry disaster off the coast of Kyrenia.

With the elections approaching and recent developments adding to political tensions, attention will also be focused on whether Mr Yılmaz or Mr Üstel address the latest political situation during their joint appearance at Ercan.
