Dozens of people from mixed-marriage families were turned back at crossing points into South Cyprus on Sunday without being given a reason, Kıbrıs Postası columnist Erçin Şahmaran said.

In a social media post, Şahmaran said people in mixed marriages and children born to those couples had been refused entry. He did not say which crossing points were involved.

His account came a day before Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides were due to meet UN envoy María Ángela Holguín to discuss a package that includes four new crossing points.

Şahmaran contrasted the optimism over new crossings with what he said families were experiencing at those already open. He said the way people were being turned away reflected an entrenched attitude at the heart of the Cyprus problem.
