London scouts prepare fourth aid shipment for Gaza’s children
The initiative is led by Celal İzcibayar, chairman of the Dış Türkler İngiltere İzci Örgütü, a UK-based Turkish scouting organisation, with support from British scout leaders, scouts, their families and local volunteers.
The parcels are intended to help children who have lost parents and relatives in the war, as well as families struggling with the severe conditions in Gaza.
Items collected include children’s shoes, winter clothes, socks, school bags, sleeping bags and toys. The latest shipment also contains 87 items of clothing for boys and girls, alongside 10kg of sweets and 8kg of biscuits.
İzcibayar, who has been involved in humanitarian work for around 40 years, has continued organising the effort despite health problems. His previous work has supported people affected by the war in Ukraine, the conflict in Gaza and the earthquakes in Türkiye.
According to Avrupa Ajansı (AVA), his longstanding contribution to humanitarian causes was recognised with the British Empire Medal during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Speaking to the agency, İzcibayar said the suffering of children had prompted the group to act, adding that helping people in difficulty was central to scouting.
“We could not remain indifferent while watching and listening to such heartbreaking news,” he said. “As scouts, whose duty and principles include helping those in need, we are trying to fulfil that responsibility.”
He said that, despite his poor health, taking part in the relief effort continued to bring him comfort and a sense of purpose.
İzcibayar thanked the British scout leaders, scouts, neighbours and volunteers who contributed to the collection, giving particular thanks to supporter Ali Karaca.
The latest shipment is being prepared for dispatch before winter, with the aim of providing practical support and some comfort to children living through the conflict.
